EndurElite Chief Endurance Officer Matt Mosman discusses the steps milk goes through to be turned into casein, whey isolate, or whey concentrate protein powder.
How Whey Protein Powder Is Made Fast Facts
Ever wonder how your whey protein powder is made?
- It all starts with milk which is 80% casein and 20% whey.
- Enzymes are added to the milk to separate the casein from the whey.
- The casein portion of the separation can be turned into cheese or a casein protein powder
- The liquid whey portion of separation then goes through a series of filtration steps to remove things like fat, lactose, and carbohydrates.
- What you end up with is a whey isolate or whey concentrate (depending on how many filters the liquid whey goes through).
- Lastly, the liquid isolate or concentrate is spray dried and that is how you end up with protein powder.

Ever wonder how your whey protein powder is made? That is gonna be the topic of our "60 Second Brain Bomb" for today.
So it all starts with milk from Bessie, moo, which is 80% casein and 20% whey. From there, enzymes are added to separate the casein from the whey. Now, the casein can either be turned into cheese or your casein protein powder. Now, the whey portion of that will then be sent through a series of filtration processes that's gonna remove things like carbohydrate, lactose, and fat. And depending on how many filtration steps that whey goes through will really determine if it ends up being an isolate or a concentrate. So an isolate being a purer protein than a concentrate will go through a few more filtration steps than a whey concentrate.
So now that you have your whey isolate and liquid whey concentrate, it is then spray-dried to turn it into your protein powder. So that is how it is made.
