Do Supplements And Diets Designed To Detox Your Body Really Work?

Good morning family of fast, Matt Mosman, the Chief Endurance Officer over at EndurElite, coming at you with another episode of busting the bull. Now, I have a real humdinger on tap today because we're gonna talk about diets and supplements that are designed to detox your body.

Now, unless you've been living under a rock the last 20 years, you've probably seen all these diets composed of like fruit juices or vegetables or drinking some water or some special combination of ground-up donkey balls, apple cider vinegar and kombucha that's designed to detox your body. On the same token too, you've probably seen a lot of supplements that say they detox or revamp or rejuvenate your body, whatever that means.

So today we're gonna look at the actual evidence behind all these claims being made about detox diets and supplements and see if there's really any truth to them at all. Now, before I offend anybody, I always say if you like a certain detox you're on and it makes you feel good, absolutely, you know, stick with it, like I don't care. That's fine.

But we're gonna look at the evidence and see if it's really worth your hard earned money to follow this special diet or to buy all these supplements that are bloody expensive when it comes to detox supplements. So let's just look at a couple of the claims real quick about these special diets or supplements that are designed to do stuff.

Do Detox Diets Help You Lose Weight?

And the first claim usually made about detox diets are they are gonna help you lose weight because somehow these toxins hold onto body fat, whatever these magical toxins are in your body hold onto body fat. And when you start to detox, it basically releases the fat from the cell and it burns off. And oh my god, this diet or supplement is awesome.

But here's the truth about detox diets and weight loss, like take, for example, these detox diets that have you rely on, a lot of fruits and vegetables or juices. The thing is you're just creating a restrictive diet and creating a calorie deficit. So when calories out are greater than calories in, you're gonna lose weight. That's basic physiology. There is nothing magical about these detox diets that help you lose weight, so that claim busted.

Do Detox Supplements Remove Toxins From The Body?

Second claim is that detox diets will help you remove toxins from the body or these supplements will somehow grab on to these toxins, pull them out of your body and you feel like you're a brand new person. Well, I'm gonna tell you a little something. You have two things in your body that are really good at eliminating toxins. This is your kidney and your liver. These things are very, very, very efficient at removing any kind of toxins in your body, like alcohol or if you have a bunch of mercury in your system or things like that.

These supplements that say they're gonna detox your body and pull the toxins out. There is very little to non-existent evidence that any of these supplements work. There might be a few like spirulina, maybe curcumin maybe milk thistle that maybe work but very doubtful, very slim research on all this stuff.

So again, any claim that a detox diet or supplement makes about removing like these toxins from your body is a bunch of bullcrap. There's just no truth to it. You have your kidney. You have your liver, very, very efficient at removing toxins from your body.

Now, the last claim is a little weird. And this is that detox diets will cleanse you on a cellular level. So, I don't even know where to go with that. I don't even know what that means, cleansing on a cellular level. So, again, don't buy into all this stuff. So, that is all I have today on detox supplements and diets, my endurance friends.

Take Home Points: Little Evidence Exists To Suggest Detox Diets & Supplements Work

Really the take-home point here is there's very little evidence that the diets or the supplements work to detox your body. It's all a marketing machine getting you to buy something to give you a quick fix, whether it's to eliminate extra weight or remove toxins from your body, etc., etc., etc.

Again, if these kind of diets and supplements that you've been taking or if you tried it, make you feel good, then absolutely stick to them. But again, there's very weak evidence that any of these things work.

And a lot of these diets and supplements you're buying are so expensive that you're probably better off just eating a good all-around diet with all your macronutrients high in fruits and vegetables and things like that and then save your money. And most importantly, get out and exercise a little bit. And I guarantee you. That's gonna make you feel a heck of a lot better than any detox diet or supplement ever will.
