Ever wonder why you have your best ideas when you run, bike, or do other exercise? EndurElite Chief Endurance Officer Matt Mosman explains the science behind why this happens
The Scientific Reasons Why Your Best Ideas Happen While Running
- The exact reasons aren't known why you have your best ideas or are able to solve problems better when you run or exercise. However, there are two theories.
- The first theory states that when we exercise there is increased blood flow to the brain. With this increased blood flow, more oxygen is delivered to the cerebrum which may help it perform better and enhance mental capacities.
- The second theory has to do with an area of the brain known as the hippocampus. This area is responsible for memory and learning and has been shown by research to be highly active during exercise. When the neurons in the hippocampus fire up cognition improves.
- Take home point? Head out for some exercise the next time you’re trying to solve a mind-bending problem or looking for inspiration for your next great idea.
